Thinking and Driving - Roadside and Demolition Derby

The love and lure of the open road has always been a constant draw for DJ Caterina – be it the promised openness of a state highway (or toll road) or getting stuck in traffic. The latter is OK as long as the iPod keeps up with the good tunes and allows for the occasional sing-along. Solitary confinement in a speedy vehicle also affords many of us the added bonus time to do other things such as send e-mails, attend phone conference meetings, plan the next girls-night-out or just do some plain ol' sight-seeing. Unfortunately, many of these daily operations are occurring while we are driving.

It is with this backdrop of thinking and driving about America’s favorite pastime - the open road - that DJ Caterina finds herself pondering two automobile-related songs by Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers, Demolition Derby and Roadside. Two songs never released to the general public by the Philly-based band, but now, thanks to the digital gods have been spread to the masses via YouTube and SoundCloud.

While Demolition has made its way into the most recent of Young Rumblers reunions, Roadside has yet to surface as a live performance in the post-two-thousands or “second decade” (until something more original comes up to describe 2010-2019 – the twenty-teens?)...

In the meantime, enjoy these Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers' car songs:

- Roadside

- Demolition Derby, Live in Milan, Italy (1989)
